Vista Crashes When Changing Wireless Network

I am having a hard time with Vista.

Here is what i am doing.. and this happens 99% of the time.

1) I shutdown my PC
2) I go to a new place
3) I open my PC

at this point, the CPU usage shows 90-99% all the time, the system page file
slowly keeps increasing to the point where Vista becomes unresponsive and i
have to shut it down manually.

The problem is that when Vista boots and does not find the last network it
connected to, it doesn't find automatically the new one and tries to connect,
instead it goes berserk like i mentioned above.. the only way to make it work
is by rebooting it a couple of times, and one of the reboots, usually the
second.. it will start working again..

then when i go back home.. the same thing happens all over again.. it
doesn't connect to my network automatically, rather, the CPU usage goes off
the chart.. i manually reboot a couple of times, then it finds the network
and all is good.

Has anyone experienced this?

I have a Dell M2010, Vista Ultimate...

Henok,

Sorry... wish I had a better answer than "it works here." Admittedly, I've
only taken this laptop on one roadtrip, but I connected to two separate
networks while on the road and did not experience the same issue you're
having.

I don't know that the network issue is related to pagefile issue. How much
RAM does your laptop have? (Assume it's a laptop if you're taking it on the
road.) How much of that RAM is allocated to the video system? What other
tasks are started automatically when your laptop starts?

Hello Lang,
Thanks for the fast response. My laptop has 2Gig RAM..

I'm not sure how the 2Gigs are distributed or how to check for that..

Thank you,

If it was doing that to me, I would remove all network connections from the
system AND all Network adpaters from device manager & reboot.
Once logged in again, I would re-establish the network after the NIC was
redetected/installed.
It could be just a corrupted driver or a bad setting.
That would give you a clean place to start.

Okay... memory shouldn't be the issue... and... to find out how much of your
RAM is allocated to video, right click on desktop, select Personalize, click
Display Settings link, Click Advanced Settings button, and that window
should detail how much RAM is being allocated to video. I shouldn't think
that's the issue here.

Where are you getting the services list from? Just curious. Certainly does
seem like an awful lot of svchost entries. But you are running SQL Server on
your box, so that may explain the high number of svchost entries. (And
that's just a SWAG... I'm no SQL Server SME. And maybe I have that many
instances of svchost running too, but don't know where to look.)

The only suggestion I can make at this point is to start removing third
party entries from the Defender list... select a third party entry, like
skype, and hit the disable button. Either shut the app down or restart. See
if the pagefile still goes nuts. If yes, choose another app to disable.
Repeat inspection of pagefile. If still going nuts, move on to third app to
disable... etc, etc., etc.

Henok,
Please excuse me for asking you a question in this thread, but I can't find
how to send a private message.
I noticed that you have the qliner program's Quotes running in Vista. What
email program do you use? I have had Quotes running in Thunderbird on my XP
machine for years, but I can't get Vista to work repeatedly. When I set it
up, it works until I close Thunderbird. What I have to do is go into
Account Settings, then in Attach this signature, select Choose, select the
file again, and close. It will NOT allow me to click OK, which is what I
believe is the problem. Anyway, please let me know if you have Quotes
working.
Wendy

Okay, answering my own question:
Thunderbird would allow me to select the file:
C:\User\myname\AppData\Roaming\Quotes\Signatures\QThunderbird.TXT
however it would repeatly save the file as:
C:\User\User\myname\AppData\Roaming\Quotes\Signatures\QThunderbird.TXT
I gave up and installed a Thunderbird AddOn called, Signature Switch and it
works great. This program allows you to switch the signatures for certain
recepiants, either preselected automatically or at the time you write the
email. The Fortune Cookie is the best one for my use, it cycles through a
list of quotes that I've built in a .txt file. Nice.

Heno, my brother has a dell that does the same thing. I was wondering if you ever found out what the problem was and how to fix it?

Thanks...

Allon.
