Vista connecting to WIN XP

Hi all,
I have a problem and can't figure out what I need to do.
I have a laptop that has Vista Home Premium and a desktop running WIN
XP Pro.
I can run the RDC to connect from the Vista to the WIN XP but I can
not see the drives on either side. I have set the C and D drives to
share and still can not see.
The computers are connected to a Linksys Router WRT54G, they both
have a firewall. The Vista is running Symantec's and my desktop (WIN
XP) is running PC Tools. I have even gone so far as to turn the
firewall's off with no luck.
IF anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I want to
secure my whole system, but won't try until I can see the drives back
between both computers.

Dan (Still going in circles)

what do you receive if using net view \\remotepcipaddress?

Bob,
I am not sure what you are asking me. I know enough networking to get
into trouble and very little about Vista. I can ping both ways with
computers, but I can not see any files, folders or drives that I have
setup for sharing. I should have also mentioned that both the desktop
and the laptop, although connected to Linksys, are both in the house
and not trying to connect from outside the local area.
If I connect from my work office to the home computer with the RDC, I
can see all drives and move files between the two units. Both units
are WIN XP Pro. Where as the home units are VISTA and WIN XP Pro.

You mean you can't see the local and remote drives when your in a Remote
Desktop session or you can't see remote shared drives in network explorer?

When I connect RDC from the laptop to the desktop, I can not go to My
Computer on either one and see the other PC's/Laptop drives.
When I connect from my office, out of the house, to my home desktop, I
can see the drives on both computers when I go to My Computer.
When I connect Laptop to PC or reverse PC to Laptop I can not do any
copy or paste in either direction like I can when I connect from my
office computer. I really think it has something to do with the VISTA,
but I can not figure it out.
How you been do Al?

Dan (Still going in circles)

Use ipconfig find out the IP address. On client computer, for example XP,
type this command net view "\\remotepcipaddress" (remote pcipaddress is
Vista ip address in this case). You may receive the system error and code.
post them back.

Based on this issue and the other issue that Bob is working on with you I
suggest completely uninstalling Symantec from the laptop Vista machine to
start. I think its probably causing both issues. You might need to go to the
Symantec site to get the uninstall procedure which I understand is more than
just running an uninstall program.

Been doing Ok...Thanks for asking...

Ok, I opened the cmd prompt window and entered net view
"\\remotepcipaddress". I did this in both the laptop and the desktop
and got an system error 53. I know that the ip addresses are actually
set. The desktop is 192.168.1.101 and the laptop is 192.168.1.100.

Does this help you any?

Dan (Still going in circles)

Did you do you "net view \\192.168.1.101"

This is the reading from the desktop (WIN XP) computer.

C:\Documents and Settings\Dan>net view \\192.168.1.101

I want to thank you both for all your help. I am now able to see the
desktop (XP) on my laptop (VISTA), but I can not see the laptop on my
desktop.
Any suggestions? Al your response to Taibear was very helpful, I went
back an rechecked the settings for the RDC advance tab and found they
were not correctly set.
So, now the only possible problem I have left is seeing the laptop
drives/folders on my desktop.
