Vista clients using WSUS configured via GP

In GP, the "Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations" is
enabled and configured for 5 minutes.

I noticed today, that the vista (public beta 2 dvd) version of the
reboot prompt allows the user (I was logged in under the domain
administrator account) to change when they will next be notified.

I didn't play around with it to see if I selected 4 hours or some other
value if I would still be notified after another 5 minutes. Still,
even if that were the case, that would seem to be misleading to the
logged on user at best. If it actually did respect the user set value
instead of the GP set one then hmm... :/

Given that Vista is not a supported OS of WSUS v2.0, this seeming anomaly
could simply be exactly that. An anomaly that will be worked out when the
next version of WSUS is released -- which will support Vista.

That may also be a function of the /admin/ account having the ability to
(temporarily) change the registry value that controls the "next
notification", which, presumably, would be less than the minimum default
policy refresh time of 60 minutes.

For that matter, the capability exists right now in a Win2000/XP client,
where the administrator knows which registry value to edit. It will, of
course, be overwritten (reset) during the next policy refresh cycle.

As far as the values it can be set to.. I'm sure that's driven by the
permissable values associated with that registry key, which can be set from
1 minute to 1440 minutes (currently), but, as noted, it will be overwritten
to the policy configured value if manually set to anything more than 60-120
minutes.

I will, however, follow up on this question with the WSUS/WUS team
vis-a-vis the Vista WUA client, and see what the intended behavior actually
is.

Lawrence,

I thought SP1 did support Vista?

Of course it's an unsupported, unreleased OS, but isn't WSUS ready for it
when it does RTM?

WSUS SP1 provides /updates/ for Windows Vista Beta 2 systems
(theoretically), and will do so for Vista RTM systems without further
change.

However, the Windows Update Agent that ships with Windows Vista Beta 2 is
(unless it's v5.8.0.2607) a /beta/ product, and it's behavior with respect
to operation on the Vista OS, or with respect to installation and management
of those updates, or the User Interface, itself, should all be considered
accordingly.

I've not actually installed a Vista Beta client on a WSUS 2.0 environment,
yet, so when I get the chance, I may find out more information -- including
that I've been mistaken about some things I'm thinking otherwise about right
now. :-)

I have only one Vista client on my "in house" WSUS SP1 and have done very
little testing, no updates so far. It shows OS as "Windows Vista" and is
reporting in on schedule. The only update is shows it needs is the OL2003
Junk mail filter KB919031

That's about all I know about it so far.

Thanks kj.

This is what I expected...
2006-07-13 18:45:27:904 1064 614 Setup Client version: Core: 6.0.5384.4
Aux: 6.0.5384.4

The v6.0.x WUA shipping with Vista/Longhorn products is a /beta/ WUA client.

I'll do some testing on the "Reboot Later" scenario, though, and if the
ability to locally change the delay appears to be problematic, or
misleading, I'll file a 'bug' against the WUA.
