Hi Chad, much thanks for the indepth reply. When I move to VISTA I'llChad Harris said:Hi Tom--
When you click start in Vista you have Search above it and Search is your
friend in Vista as google and MSN Search are your friend on the net.
For chkdsk:
1) Click Start button and type chkdsk in the search area and it will pop
up and click it.
2) You can also run chkdsk from the run box or the command prompt. The
reason I mention this is that there are several types of chkdsk reflected
in command switches and that's useful if you have your HD divided into
more than one drive--you can specify. For example if you hit Windows key
+ R bringing up run box, you can type chkdsk: c /r and that "r switch"
runs what for many people is the most capable chkdsk because R implies F
and implies means includes.
For defrag:
Ckick start button and type in defrag and up will pop Disk Defragmenter on
the Start menu.
Tip: MSFT has made an adequate defragger in Vista, but I urge everyone to
try Raxco's perfect disk for free for 60 days or Diskeeper's defrag for
free. They are both full functionality trials.

www.diskeeper.com
They are both much better and faster. For some reason in Windows 7, the
defrag takes for evah and evah and those two guys won't work in Windows 7
as of yet. But they are considerably better than the native defragger in
Vista and in XP and always will be because MSFT can't be expected to ship
every utility for free for financial and legal reasons.
Good luck,

admin rights.
You need an elevated command prompt, so after you type "cmd" into the
Vista search box, and the result shows up, right click on CMD and
choose 'run as administrator'. As Chad says, chkdsk /r is your best bet
for a thorough scan.
And, another vote for Diskeeper 2008. I too use, and recommend it.
