Is the machine Vista hardware compatible?

Yes, all of my hardware is vista compatable. Running a AMD64 athlon 3000+,
4Gb Ram, ATI Radeon 600, 80GB HDD, DVD-RW.

This is just me, unless you're doing an upgrade from Vista to Vista, like
Premium to Ultimate, then you should consider just wiping out/format the HD
and do a fresh install of the O/S, to avoid problems of a somewhat
different O/S exiting on the HD.

When moving to a different O/S like ME to Win 2k or Win 2K to XP on the same
machine, I just wipe out the existing O/S and do a fresh install.

If the upgrade CD for Vista allows you to format the HD and then lay down
the O/S fresh, then you might want to consider that.
