My college student daughter's laptop, recently purchased, has stopped
accessing the net successfully.
Machine is a Lenovo T61 Thinkpad running Vista Business
On a wired connection we get a good IP address from the DHCP server, and can
ping other machines on the network, as well as pinging things on the public
internet by IP address or by name. But browsers fail to connect. They cannot
even bring up the router admin page (served locally).
Have run through a lot of diagnostics processes internal and found via
google etc. no joy. The only thing I have seen that seems not working or off
is the IPv6 to v4 bridging driver. Device manager shows it with the warning
yellow triangle and properties general says "not working because Windows
cannot load the drivers required for the device (code 31)" I tried turning it
off completely, (some site or another suggested that) but that did not work.
Where do the drivers for this come from? What would I need to reinstall to
get it the drivers?
The machine does not have a lot installed on it, Firefox, MS Office 2003
and Symantic AntiVirus (10.2.0.276 version) being the main things that the
system did not come with.
My daughter swears she didnt' install anything, it just stopped working one
day. Actually the outage she reported was that FireFox stopped first, and IE
continued ot work for a few more days and then it stopped too.
Turning off Windows Firewall has no effect. Booting in safe mode has no
effect.
I've went so far as to turn off all non MS services and startup applications
and even that does not allow connectivity, same symptoms.
I could use some advice for things to check, or for more powerful
diagnostics to try to run to determine what the issue is. Anyone have any
ideas? Thanks.
