in Windows XP there was a utility to change the boot screen of the OS. it
was a 3rd party one. it works great in xp. I tried using it in vista but it
does not work. does anyone know of a utility that I can use to change the
boot screen in vista?

Are you thinking about "Bootskin" by any chance? I haven't tried it on
Vista, yet, but it is in my plans.

thanks, i'll give them a try.

Steven--

Timetable wise, just as in XP, many more of this type hack/tweak will
follow as a few months pass. Meanwhile try these sites:

http://www.winmodify.net/files.php?section=Bootscreens

http://themes.belchfire.net/affiliates.html

They may not have boot screen customizations yet, or many but will and
it's a good site:
http://www.vistamania.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=475&Itemid=34

Also do a search on Vista Bootscreens, ecto

Good luck,

CH

i tried the "bootskin" applications. it works but with some issues.

-it applies the default skin. the os/2 warp IBM skin.
-it won't let you change it to another skin.
-and i'm not sure if it will let you go back to the os bootskin yet.
i have not tried that yet for some reason. oh well.

if anyone finds out how to manually change the skin, please tell me.
it shouldn't be that hard. after all, the bootskin applied skin should be
stored ina findable place.
once found it just needs to be replaced.
i'm not talking about the program files location just in case your not sure.

if i find a fix to the issue, i'll post it.

i messed areound with "bootskin" a bit and it will work with compatibilty
mode (xp sp2).

Hey Thanks, Steve. I have a bunch of skins, any one of them is better than
what is included. Maybe I'll go with Commodore 64...

i made my own.
i took some one elses, edit the bitmap files and the txt files. then my
custum boot skin is ready.
one is just an image of a rose.
well i have two versions of that one.
one for xp and one for vista.

my other one does not have any images in it at all.
its not made to look good.
even though it looks much better then the default xp boot skin.
this one i made a while ago.
i made this one with a hardware command in it.
the hardware command was to start up this technology i made that made the pc
go a lot faster.
it was a special type of RAM i made.
i have not tested it in vista yet because of the PCs that it was installed
in do not have high enough specs to run vista.
i don't have it on the pc i am using now because the technology is PC
specific and besides my new laptop does not need it.
maybe i'll make a new version of it just for vista but that will take a
while.

Well, I tried bootskin and got the fatal error on reboot. I assume that it
is not compatible with x64. And yes, I did select the Win XP SP2 comp.
mode, and I have UAC turned off. Oh, well, I'll try something else.

i turn off the uac as well. i also made it so that windows security senter
does not bother me about it.
i wish you the best off luck with the bootskin issue.
