Bryan Ahola

I am attempting to install this version from my MSDN account...

Windows Vista Beta 2 (x86) - DVD (English)

Date/Time Posted
2006-05-23 17:34:24 (UTC)
File
en_windows_vista_beta2_x86_dvd.iso ISO-9660 DVD Image
File Size
3200 MB

The machine I am installing is currently running build 5308 with no
problems. I am trying to install directly off of the DVD. I get to the
point of entering my cd key. After I press next, there is a 30 sec pause
and then an error pops up...

"Setup failed to open the windows image file"

And after that the install just hangs and I have to reboot to do anything
with it again. I am at a loss for what is causing this. I have googled the
error and come up with nothing. I still have to try and use a different DVD
drive to see if that is the issue, but I do not believe it is because the
install gets that far. Any help would be great. Thanks - Bryan

Ahh right :o) Simply use Daemon Tools (www.daemon-tools.cc) to mount the
image or you can use the same tool to copy all the files from the image onto
a folder on the desktop - running from here should be OK :o)

I tried to install Daemon Tools on the Vista Build 5803 but it hangs while
trying to reboot post install. Should I wipe out the existing Vista install
before trying the new build? Should I throw XP on first and then upgrade
through windows? I am also going to install Virtual PC on my main system
and try to install there. I already use D-Tools and have the .ISO on the
same machine. Just to see if my download is good, I cannot imagine that it
is not. Is there a Virtual CD program that works with Vista Build 5803? I
have copied the .ISO there too but have no way to access since D-Tools will
not install. Thanks for your help with this!

This issue might have been fixed in BETA 2, I recommend you install 5384.4
to see if the error has been fixed.
"The error message you received indicates some kind of file copy problem.
This could be attributed to an I/O
error, a bad DVD burn, or bad download of the ISO. If you experience this
problem again, we recommend redownloading the ISO and/or reburning the DVD
at the slowest possible speed. If that does not solve this problem, you
might try virtual DVD software (available on the internet) or copying all
the setup files to a flat share and then running setup from there."

You may as well want to CRC check your downloaded ISO before redownloading
it. If the CRC check indicates a "good" download, try reburning at the
slowest speed possible. If the CRC check indicates a corrupt image,
redownload and then reburn @slowest speed.

Also, attach copy the C:\$windows.~bt\sources\panther\setupact.log file so I
can send it in for you or you can send it in using the Feedback link on your
desktop.

Is there a way to tell exactly which build I have downloaded. It is the
only Vista Beta 2 English x86 that is listed. I just downloaded it 2 or 3
days ago. I am currently installing through Virtual PC and it has gotten
past the point it did before (indicating the .ISO is good?) So it could be
the actual DVD drive on the test PC. I have tried 2 different burned discs
and both came up with the same results. If I am running Vista 5308
currently on the test machine, can I install from a remote location, or
should I just copy over the files and then run the install from Windows
Vista? Can I access the setupact.log if the install never runs in the old
Vista Build? Basically if I try to run the install through build 5308 I
will get a autorun.dll is not valid or cannot be found and it never proceeds
past that point. Never even showing the initial splash screen for the 5381
install (I think that is the version I am running anyway) Thanks for your
help on this!

There are two ways to detect which build is installed on your system. In
Windows Vista, click Start > All Programs > Run > type in Winver > OK

On the About Windows dialogue, you should see Version 6.0 (5384.xxx.xxxx)
depending whichever build you are using, this is just an example.

If you have a burnt copy of the ISO on a DVD, you can open the disk, right
click the Setup.exe icon > click properties > Version (tab) > under "Other
version informatio" select File Version in the "Item name:" list > Value
information should detail the build information.

You can't upgrade the old Vista version with the new. If tried and the
install doesn't fail, it could cause odd complications right off the bat or
down the road a bit. Unless you want to keep the old Vista around for
comparison (multi-boot), I would get rid of it.

Creating a multi-boot system by starting Vista setup from within XP works
well though.

If your goal is to be running a single version of Vista, I would run setup
directly from the DVD. You don't have to install XP first unless you want
to.

Virtual PC is possible (extensions need to be added) but it's not a
scenario that I've tried.

About checking the CRC of the file ... how are you doing that?

Sorry for the novice question ... I've never had problems with downloads
from MSDN before ... but this release of Vista is giving me fits. I've
downloaded and installed three previous releases and I've been able to do a
clean install direct from DVD on all of them on the same system.

I haven't been able to do that with the beta 2 release ... and now have to
test the download file ...

Thanks for the help.

Hi,
I'm also seeing this problem with the x64 version of Beta2.
I'm running the install off a DVD+R, this computer only has windows XP 32bit
installed, so I can't run setup from there.
The ISO appears to have the correct MD5 (E43502D0A15EADD551119D5639859E04)
and I have tried burning the disc on two seperate PCs, at slow burn speeds.
Has anyone yet found a fix to this issue when doing a clean install?

Thanks,

Alastair Porter

I got it to burn fine with Nero then attempted installing it from a cold boot
- press any key prompt - I wanted to do a brand new setup but no luck - got a
setup.dll missing or corrupt but if I did the upgrade from within Windows XP
Pro 32bit - works fine...interesting beta re;lease that won't llet you do a
clean install.....

I'm in your boat Alastair...
Have a 32bit trying to go 64.....All I get is error....no windows image file
twice on two burns with two different iso's....

I am in the same boat. I am installing vista from virtual PC and whenever i
put in the Cd key and hit Next it says "setup failed to open the Windows
image file". This is on Virtual PC installing from a 6.0.5384.4 version DVD.

My idea is to install Windows XP Pro through virtual PC and then upgrade to
vista through that same virtual PC. Any ideas if this would work?

I don't want to install vista overwriting my main OS because I have many
important files on it.

Please tell me if my idea would theoretically work or if I should try
something else.

Thanks.

UPDATE: After many hours of work, I installed Windows XP Pro SP2 on the
Virtual Machine and then after a few more hours of work I got the Vista
Installation to work. One problem. I'm still getting the stupid error!
It's still giving me "setup failed to open the image file." Does that mean
that I'm typing in my CD key wrong? I am really mad right now because I
don't know what to do from here. Any ideas?

I'm not putting in the CD Key wrong. I put it in wrong on purpose and it
gave me an error that the key was wrong. Remember, I'm running inside of
Virtual PC. I have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed and am trying to upgrade to
vista. It gives me the "setup failed to open the image file" error whenever
I put the CD key in correctly. It's as if it doesn't know what to do after
the CD Key is entered. Someone please help me.

After having this same error, I seemed to have found a solution - thanks to
another post by "Bugslayer".

I simply used the Nero 6.0 'ImageDrive' feature and it worked great. This
allows you to open and view the iso image as a virtual drive in windows
explorer. You'll have the option to either run Vista setup from the virtual
drive or mount the image at startup. I believe that the difference here is
that the startup option will do a clean install rather than retain your
original 'Documents and Settings' profiles.

Nevertheless, it worked without a hitch.
