Is there any way to add other programs to autoplay in vista? 'Cos I don't
like to use the defaults.

Did you even read what I asked?

Yeah you said "Is there any way to add other programs to autoplay in
vista? 'Cos I don't like to use the defaults."

What does the Cosine (Cos) have to do with your problem?

I meant for example that if I put a dvd in to the drive, it opens in
vlc(videolan). As you can only chose from the default opetions: play with
media player , open folder to view files using windows explorer, take no
action etc. I'd like to set up 3rd party programs for autoplay. So what I
originally asked was that can you add other than windows programs to
autoplay. Thanks for trying to help though =). My first post was a bit not
informative enough. =)

It's the responsibility of the application vendor to add themselves to
AutoPlay. It's actually really easy to do this. Does VLC not do this? You
should politely request they add this support. Please do that on their
forums. If they mention having problems with implementation (they
shouldn't), lemme know (respond back to this post) and I'll check out their
questions there. =)

Cheers,
-Zach

Yeah I could do that, but its too much work to do that for every 3rd party
program I want to use with autoplay. Would be so much easier if autoplay just
had an option "add other programs to autoplay" or something like that. Thanks
for the help though.

Are you expecting to need for a large number of 3rd party applications to
add themselves to AutoPlay on your system? What vendors/applications are
failing to do this?

What are you trying to do? The appropriate thing to do is to have the
vendor take the simple steps to add this registration. This actually is
really easy for them to do. You hacking the system is much less effective
for the world community than your vendor actually supporting this the right
way. =)

So: what exactly are you trying to do here?

I am trying to add handlers to the AutoPlay box in Vista. In Windows XP
I was able to do this easily with the TweakUI PowerToy provided by
Microsoft.

I should clarify: what application are you trying to extend in this fashion?

That would be better...except that not everything is that simple. I can
(or should be able to) do it immediately by myself, rather than wait
months/years for the vendor to add the ability.

OK, but getting the vendor on the right path at least would begin the
countdown to goodness, as opposed to hoping that it magically happens on
some particularly sunny day. We're on the same page, I'm just interested in
best practices here. =)
Also, how does that work
with software whose vendor no longer exists? Or software that has been
discontinued? Or older versions of new software that are no longer
supported?

Yes, I agree that applications that never had this functionality added would
be a headache to deal with. That would be why it is important to understand
what you are trying to do with what application so that vendor does not
orphan the desires of all future users.

If your sole interest is in hacking AutoPlay, some quick Internet searches
should answer your questions. It's really not difficult, but then again I
do this sort of thing by hand in the registry all the time.

Since I *do* do this by hand, my advice to you here would have to be based
upon knowing what application you're trying to do what with. Failing that,
you would need to search for "how to create/register AutoPlay handlers" -
look up how to create Handlers and EventHandlers. It's pretty easy, but I
apologize that I'm unable to help you without knowing the specifics of what
you're referring to.

I'm not aware of any PowerToys in this arena, so that seems a dead end of
investigation at this time. Perhaps there is a third party tool that does
this. Failing that, you could either do this yourself via the registry or
request the application vendor to support that.

I've read every posting on this issue and I'm still not getting a clear and
specific response -- probably because the posters are using different
versions of English.

I am running Vista 32 on a quad-core machine. I have a burning application
that's both Vista-based and quad-core enabled that I prefer to use. Autoplay
recognized it as a choice for burning "blank CD" but it does not appear as an
option for "blank DVD".

I've contacted the application developer and they have received no other
reports of this issue.

Is there any other reason that would keep Autoplay from identifying this
application? Is there any way in which I can adjust Autoplay to do this?

Does your burning application have a "control panel" where one can
choose from all the tasks available? I use Nero and it's called "Nero
StartSmart" in that suite.

If so, can you configure autoplay to always open that application when
a blank DVD is inserted?

You DO know where it is that you set those preferences, right?

My Control Panel does NOT have an icon named "Hardware and Sound" but it DOES
have one named "Autoplay." I do not understand how your reply in any way
responds to my posting.

Yes, I do know how to set preferences -- but that specific preference is NOT
available to me through the application. This is why I made my initial
posting: Vista autoplay lists only certain applications from which one can
choose and I'd like to add THIS application to that list.

This was very easy to do in XP -- but I cannot find a way to do it in Vista.
THAT is the information I require.

I provided you with hand holding because you were either too dumb or
lazy to research it yourself. I didn't write or read the web site
pointed to. I simply tried to help you because you were too lazy to do
it yourself.

If you bothered to look under AutoPlay it gives you a laundry list of
things you can change. If following that is too hard for you then
you're probably too dumb to be using a computer to begin with.

Any more questions?

Your Control Panel is using the "Classic" interface. If you go to
"Home" you will see "Hardware and Sound" and will then see that his
reply was quite pertinent to your posting.

You seem to be irritable. Perhaps it's time to push away from the
keyboard and chill.

You're not coming across well.
