VISTA any good to upgrade to

If you really want to know the truth, read all of the posts here about the
horrors of dealing with Vista.
 
What is your present OS *not* doing that you'd like it to. If the answer is
"Nothing", don't switch. From what I've seen, Vista is XP with prettier
pictures to look at.

....plus DirectX 10 for the hardcore gamers.

That's a question you'll have to answer for yourself because that
depends on what you do and how well your current system allows you to
do it. That's not something anyone on the internet can tell you, at
least certainly not based on an eleven word post.

If you've no pressing need to upgrade I'd certainly suggest that it
wouldn't hurt you to wait and see how other people get on for a while,
let some of the most urgent patches appear, give the people who make
the applications you use a chance to produce any updates to make their
stuff work better with Vista...
