Vista and XP computers picking up an IP thru both wireless andethernet adapters

I have a 2-client network (1 vista, 1 XP) connecting to a Linksys
WRT300N. It was originally wireless, but after spotty connectivity we
*added* ethernet wiring. Connectivity was still spotty, so I dropped
by to see things for myself.

Both clients had pulled an IP address for the wireless and ethernet
cards. I have never seen this before - IIRC when the hardwire was
connected the wireless gets disabled. Is this a problem? If so, what
is the simplest solution? (I'd prefer to leave the wireless
activated)

Thanks,

Dave

Not so at all, wireless will not disable just because your connected via
ethernet. Go into the advanced network setup and change the connection order
on the nic's, set the LAN first, wireless second, or just disable the
wireless.

NO, wireless network adapter will not be disabled. These are two (2)
separate hardware devices and can co-exist in any XP setup.

Ah-ha.

And yet when used in our other office where the wireless is enabled,
the wireless adapters shut down if the ethernet is connected. So I've
never seen this before.

I'm tempted just to kill the wireless right now, but unfortunately I
won't solve the problem for when someone needs to use the wireles.

David

Then just change the connection order.

You may want to modify the router metric # so that it always connects to the
wired if both are connecting. This post may help. Please post back with the
result.
