Vista and WiFi encryption

Hi,
Can anyone tell me; if the Vista team has made any progress on WiFi
encryption?
Vista will not stay connected;if I try to use ANY encryption;be it WEP;WPA;
or WPA2!!!
A major issue;which;desperately needs to be resolved;and I would
think;that the Beta team would be investing time;and energy into
this;instead of "prettying" up the o.s. first; but at this point; it seems
that msft is more concerned with flash;than substance.
P.S.
It's defenitly NOT a hardware issue; because it's just not my make//model of
wireless router;happening on a variety of manufacturer's stuff.

Jeff

Hi,
Sometimes seconds;other times;hours; it seems random.
But when I do drop; the network analysis built into Vista says my network
key is not correct.
It then gives me a box to type in the key;which;btw;is correct;or it never
would have connected in the first place.
It then goes thru it's analysis again; and comes back with the same
results;incorrect key.
If I unplug the router;and plug it back in; Vista sees it
initially;connects corectly;then drops.
There was a post;stating that msft was aware of this;and that they were
working on it;but;either they aren't;or they can'y figure it out.
The wlan card will connect fine;with no encryption;and stay up.
So my workaround has been to run wide open;no encryption;and use mac address
filtering;to at least limit driveby access to my wlan.
It's working;but;no encryption is;and seems to be;still; an area that
would, in my humble opinion; be a high priority for those involved in
putting Vista to market. But; alas;it seems(and I'm just looking from the
outside; as a consumer) that they seem more interested in changing icons;and
prettying up the gui;than resolving core issues.

Jeff

Hmm,
OK,
Is it working for you with WEP;WPA;or WPA2?
Cuz if so; that's the first I've heard.
And if so; GREAT!
Jeff

I am running

Linksys WRT54G router with v 4 of the software
Protocal - WPA personal with TKIP with refresh rate every 3600 seconds

Router is connected to DSL line running PPPoe with Keep alive checked.
Was basically connected for over 24 horus.

Netgear was listed as support by a Vista driver.

Hi,
Next question,
Maybe it's new; but I have a Intel 3945abg wlan card; with a Linksys
WRT54Gx2;with firmware updated;
still dropping; same at first; WPA personal with TKIP with refresh rate
every 3600 seconds; connected to cable modem. No dice with wpa.
If you're not having a problem; the only two things I see different in
our setup are; the wlan card;your's is Nwtgear;mine Intel; and the hardline
connect.
Still;all in all; you're the first person I've seen;that hasn't had wlan
encryption issues. And maybe it's been resolved; hopefully it has.
And have been following this since beta 2 released.
Any suggestions?

David;
My apologies;
They must have fixed it since last I checked. Assuming;is always a bad
thing.
After I read your reply; I thought Hmmmm; wait; I've not actually chckd
lately.
So; accessed the router;turned WPA2 with tkip back on; in addition to
leaving mac filtering on; and so far;so good.
Have restared the pc;and it's holding;so far.
Well; if it's resolved; GREAT; was pretty much the ONLY issue I've had with
Vista; all the other stuff will get worked out; eventually.
At least I hope so. Been seeing lots of opinion;and read where MSFT
themselves said(MSFT-we know there are bugs;but we aren't going to fix them
till after RTM); where ppl(MVP's etc;) have stated that they think it would
be wrong to release; before at least another beta; before RC1.
I thought;hmm; all the driver and app issues aren't MSFT's problem, but
core stuff is.
WLAN being major.
Well; 20 minutes;no drops!!! :-)!!!!
Jeff

Well;
Spoke too soon;failed as soon as i sent that last post.
Again; maybe it's me; but highly unlikely; many ppl have posted about this;
and again; I don't believe it's hardware;(reason being; it all worked great
in xp); something in the new stack isn't right yet.
MSFT even acknowledged such;weeks ago
Hopefully it gets resolved soon.

I have yet to get WEP / WPA to work no matter what I try and no manufacturers
seem to be comming forward with Vista 64bit drivers so i'm not trying vista
very often as it is a pain having to disable the WPA settings just to use it,
if it is not sorted out soon I may just give up and remove.

I am not at my Vista machine right now.

What happens if you do this:
Start
run
netsetup.cpl?

How to keep Wireless Connection from Changing

from this link:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1544557,00.asp
It appears that configuration applet searches for a new connection
every 3 minutes. In order to stop the search, drag a short cut to the
desktop with the c:\windows\system32\net.exe, under properties after
net.exe, hit the space bar and add stop wzcsvc. To start the search
change the stop to start.

I would look here:
http://forums.linksys.com/

I would also do this:

1. Update the firmware to version 4. I started out at v1 and haven't
looked back.
2. If you decide to do #1, make sure you also have the latest version
of v2 firmware .
3. Make sure you know how to get rid of v4. Number 2 and #3 also the
same. make sure that you know how to dump v4 if you need to.

I would also remove your wireless network and re-do.

Look at the setup items.

There is an item item called "keep this connection active when
computer is on".

You access this when you manually setup the wireless card.

+1 on this. using WEP it dosent auto connect at startup, and disconnects and
reconnects randomly all the time.

fix fix fix pls :)

I have almost the same issue. The Vista machine will not connect the wireless
network that is WEP encrypted even though my laptop (and previous Windows) is
happy to. Fortunately, it is quite happy to connect to next door's unsecured
broadband! ;-)

I'm runnung a D-Link DWL-520 to connect to a D-Link ADSL access point.
