Vista and hard drive space

If I remember right about 11GB for setup and a little more than half of that
when up and running.

These figures have been very accurate, but how crowded you get Ryan will
depend on how many programs of course that you want to install. If you had
a way to make your drive bigger, it'd be nice but you'll sure get it
installed and can run it fine--and put key programs on it you want.

Its test pc, I have Vista on 10 gig hdd, and server 2003, on a 20 gig drive.
Vista installed is about 6 gig, with swap file and apps, you would need
another hdd.

Vista drive c: 10 gig hdd, formatted, 9.53 gig, after Vista install, 3.02
gig free.
Enterprise Server 2003 d: 10 gig.
Apps e: 10 gig

Vista install probably used your 20gig disk for setup files ...

Does anyone know exactly how much space does Vista beta 2 take on a clean
install?

I installed on a 12GB partition, but you should know that your Windows
folder alone is going to be 7 GB. If you leave System Restore
enabled, that can take up another 1GB. If you have 1GB of RAM, then
hiberfil.sys is going to be 1GB in size. Unless you have another
drive free for your pagefile, that's going to be another 1.5GB.
The point I'm making is that if you can get more than 12GB it would be
good. If not, it will work.

Ryan: I would say that the smallest drive you could use is 40GB.
My install took roughly 15GB's.
Hope this helps you

Sincerely

40GB is recommended with 15GB free. I use 60GB freshly formatted for my
installations.

If you plan to test Vista, you ought to allow for about 20-30GB for programs
you add. It really depends on how many apps you plan to add and how large
they are. The Windows folder will get smaller as the builds progress, and
there will be many less ancillary files needed to load and copied.
According to the SR PM, SR takes a max of 15% of the drive or partition in
Vista, so I'm not sure of the origin of "1GB" for SR. It would depend
entirely upon the individual--and the size can also be controlled a number
of ways. The page file can of course be varied in size, and once you have
1GB of RAM or greater, you're not going to make any significant impact on
speed or retrieval by increasing the page file.

If you try to run with 12GB, your ability to install programs and the amount
of music/pictures most people will want to work with will be significantly
limited.
