I have been reading that Vista does not support 1394 firewire? I am trying
to hook up my video camera to capture and Vista does not see the camera
attached to the 1394 port. How can I get Vista to see it?

Probably a driver problem. Mine works fine with Vista business.

In the device manager I have listed:

AGERE OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
6/21/2006 version 6.0.6000.16386 from Microsoft

It says the device is working properly and the "update driver" button does
not find anything. Anything else I can try?

When I installed vista U I forgot I had the firewire card installed but
vista installed the drivers for it. I have an NEC card. I tried my dv cam
and it works fine, samsung 103.

It works fine here.

I have had similar problems. Question for you; When you plug your camera in,
can you run the controls from the computer but simply not see the image and
are unsuccessful with the DV transfer?

I had this same problem with an external drive connect to Firewire 1394.
Just by luck it also had an USB port I could use.

I have a Sony FX1 and a LaCie Hard Drive both hooked up via Firewire, both
are recognized by Vista x64. Vista currently only supports 1394a (400
speed).

I use Sony's Vegas 7.0 to do my video transfers and can operate the camera
from within the program. Haven't tried using Windows Movie Maker.

What I have been finding out is all flavors of Vista are different in one
way or another. What may work in Vista 64 may not work in Vista 32, The same
with Vista Ultimate may not work in Vista Home Premium.

So how does one tell what version of firewire 1394 they have?

I have the same problem. I can't get Vista (home premium) to even
recognise when my video camera (Canon mvx20i) is connected to my
computer with firewire cable (4 pin). :-(
I have tried Ulead videostudio 10 and Windows movie maker.

I also have this problem. I have Vista Home Premium on my Dell Notebook
Computer. When I connect my Sony HC3 camcorder, Vista goes through the driver
install process, eventually asking me for a Sony driver disk, which I do not
have, and is not provided by Sony. So the driver install step always fails
.... so my camera is not even available in Windows Movie Maker ...

I think the 1394 OHCI drivers were left out of Vista Home Premium ... So how
do I get them?

I looked deeper into this problem. Turns out that a low level driver for my
1394 port is present in Windows Home Premium .. but the generic AVC drivers
Microsoft ships in Vista Ultimate are missing. This is why my Dell Laptop
will not capture via Firewire. This is a major Vista show stopper for me.

So I think this means I need to buy the Vista Ultimate upgrade in order to
get these drivers .. What a Rip OFF!

How Could Microsoft even think that home users do not want to capture video
from their camcorders???????

Handycam Model: Sony DCR TRV265E
Laptop: Windows Vista 32 bit

When I connect my handycam via USB cable, it is seen in Device manager
(I have downloaded the necessary driver from Sony). I can see the
video
using Skype chatting tool. Even google chat can show video through the
handycam. But Microsoft Movie Maker cannot recognize it at all.

Sony's picture package does not work in Vista, so Sony has provided
another software Picture Motion Browser downloadable from their site.
Even this software fail to recognize the handycam.

It was mentioned that Motion browser works in i.LINK cable, which is,
I
think the firewire cable. So I connected the handycam through
firewire.
Now Skype, Google chat, device manager, Movie Maker, Motion Browser
...
none of them can recognize the handycam through firewire.

What could be the problem?

I also tried to connect both USB and firewire, noly USB mode is
acknowledged by Skype and google chat, but nobody can see it via the
firewire.

Is the firewire card defective? My lappy is brand new and within
warranty.

Read the article on Twain, it might help.

And this one about firewire.

Can`t give you much about Vista, `cos i haven`t
tried to connect my camera in Vista yet.
It works fine in XP.

I'm new here so excuse my not knowing where to go to post a new
thread.(I've looked)

My problem is that I can't access my Lacie 160 GIG drive(its been
formatted NTSC). I've checked all my drivers which are up to date.
Here's the weird part. I have this plugged into a 1394 cardbus and when
I turn the drive on & check the "safely remove hardware" icon it shows
the card & the lacie drive & the drive letter. However If I try to
access the drive either at that location or in explorer the system
hangs...not locks up and will stay in this state until I turn the drive
off. Very Weird....I'm thinking vista's the problem. Is this fixable. I
really have had no issues at all with Vista & like it very much. I
wonder if there's time to download the Ver.7 trial. Perhaps I find a fix
in that Op/Sys. Mike

It would be better to start a new thread.

Also, I suspect your drive is NTFS, rather than NTSC. Although I'm having a
good time trying to come up with a meaningful interpretation.

Yes, I know it's a typo - I've made exactly the same one :-)

I have a canon xh a1s camcorder. Its a PAL cam.. My computer is not
detecting the cam when connected through a firewire cable. what do I
do.

I use windows xp, 32 bit graphic card!!!

This is a Vista OS group. I'd suggest that you post in an XP group or a
video group to get answers...

Or even look on the Canon site.
