Sensible answers please.
What is the purpose of Aero?
OK! I'm looking at Aero now and I can see
what is behind what I'm typing, but I can't see
the reasoning behind this.
Is it not distracting from what you are dealing with?

Hmmmmmm, maybe I'm missing something!
Your answers will, no doubt, tell me what I'm missing!.

Lonewolf,

Hopefully this is a sensible answer, but the purpose is simply to make the
OS more graphically appealing to its users, and get more users to enjoy using
their computer, and therefore get more users to buy Microsoft software. I
have Vista, but turn the Aero effects off. Does the 'Windows' + 'Tab' key
also help possibly with organising your windows on-screen? This may be a
'organisation' advantage that makes Vista better than other OS's..... I'm not
overly sure myself, but I can see where your confusion on its usefulness is
coming from.

A better question might be Why Not?

btw, Aero is only the theme. I suspect that what you are asking about is
the 3d effect which is called Glass. You can have Aero without Glass and
you can have other themes that use Glass.

Vista is designed to take advantage of the huge advances in graphics
rendering made since XP came out. The most important advance in Vista isn't
even Glass. It is the fact that the desktop is now rendered by the system's
GPU rather than the CPU as it was in all previous editions of Windows. Even
if your computer could not render the 3d effects Vista would still use the
GPU to do the rendering. This takes a huge load off of the CPU and improves
system performance greatly whether you are using Glass or not.

What Windows Aero?

A: " Windows Vista is the first Windows operating system that has a user
experience that can gracefully scale to the hardware capabilities of the
computer it is installed on. All computers that meet minimal hardware
requirements will see the Windows Vista Basic user experience which is a
refined version of the typical windows GUI. Those users who exceed the
minimal requirments will be able to use Aero Effects. Windows Aero is an
environment with an additional level of visual sophistication, one that is
even more responsive and manageable, providing a further level of clarity and
confidence to Windows users. Aero allows windows to be transparent in color
so you can always see what is behind it. In order to use Aero generally you
must have a fairly recent graphics card (GPU) with at leaste 64mb of
dedicated memory. System memory is also important and should stay above 1GB
for optimal perfomance."

Thanks to all who posted to my original question. A very sensible response.

To Synapse Syndrome, what is a minger?

At top is an answer from MS. Sort of answers my question, but still leaves
me wondering if Aero & 'Glass' aren't the same thing!

Colin Barnhorst - An excellent post. Explains the inner working
of the system better than MS could ever explain it.

Would appreciate a decription of what 2 programs
to try to see the difference (if any) between using Aero
and not using it.

Please don't tell me I should have gone to MS first before posting
as their answer only lead me to post in the first place.

thanks to all,

Its not just a pretty face, its a rewritten graphics subsystem. For a
developer targeting Vista, as an example, there is no more OnPaint function
handling to be concerned with.
Did you know that a lot of the work is handled by the GPU instead of the CPU
when you are using Aero.

Also:
"When using Windows Aero, open windows glide smoothly on your screen when
you move or resize them. There are no redraw artifacts, latency, or
"tearing" effects that you sometimes see, particularly in windows that
display dynamic content such as video. Using Aero will even reduce legacy
graphics driver-related problems on your system, giving you an even more
confident and stable Windows desktop experience.
