Just got an HP laptop with Vista 64 bit. My home network is working well
(have 2 XP machines and 2 Vista machines (one 32 bit and one 64 bit)).
However, the new 64 bit laptop has the network discovery feature turn itself
off on occasion. Tells me it has gone from a private to a public network. I
have to reboot the PC. I have done searches and many other folks have had
the same problem, but I have not seen a solution. Any help out there?
Thanks in advance.

Have you changed the SSID from the router default? I've seen this problem
when a neighbour has the same SSID (e.g. linksys or dlink) and is not using
encryption. Make sure you are connected to the router you think you are. If
this is not the problem are there any errors in the event logs when the
network changes from private to public?

The problem mainly occurs after the laptop is brought out of sleep mode. How
do I get to event logs?

This blog has some troubleshooting tips to help diagnose sleep/resume
problems.

Sleep/resume problems are almost always caused by a misbehaving driver.
Check that your network card has the latest driver. I would get these from
the manufacturer's site. I would also try the latest driver from the NIC
chipset manufacturer. What is the model of the laptop?

It is thus . . . .

HP Pavillion DV6929WM Notebook

I have also seen it fail when in normal operating mode, just out of the
blue. I do not believe there is problem with SSID, as this is very unique.

The latest drivers from HP are here

You may have better luck with wireless networking by uninstalling the HP
wireless assistant. Depending on which of the wireless options you have, you
may want to go to the wireless chipset manufacturers site and try their
latest driver as well.

Does the problem happen if you turn off wireless networking and use a wired
connection?
