"Documents and Settings" folder is not accessible even as Administrator.
Please help.

I believe it is just a shortcut to the Users folders created for legacy applications.

Vista does not use the term Documents and Settings as a file path. It is
now called Users. And if you want to shortcut back to XP Desktop from Vista
Desktop on a dual boot it's:

C:\[whatever drive XP on]\Documents and Settings\Churin's profile\Desktop

Try C:\ [ whatever drive Vista is on] Users and go from there.

This seems to be due to a security feature of Windows. (XP has this
characteristic as well). You can resolve the problem of unaccessible folders
by disabiling file sharing and, if necessary, taking ownership of the folder.

Disable file sharing by clicking start, then click on "network", then click
on "Network and sharing center" and click on the radio button next to file
sharing and turn it off. (I don't think you can take ownership of a folder if
file sharing is "ON"... since this would make your 'puter vulnerable to
attack)

That's part one... part two is below. This is from Windows Help:

To take ownership of a folder
Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click
Properties.

Click the Security tab, click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

Click Edit. If you are prompted for an administrator password or
confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Click the name of the person you want to give ownership to. (I give it to
"Everyone"...cuz it's the only way I can get it to work right)

If you want that person to be the owner of files and subfolders in this
folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.

Click OK.

You should then be able to open the folder.

Chad and Shanedog:

Thanks for your responses. I do not know why my original post disappered.

Please note that I am not dual booting. I wonder why "Documents and
Settings" folder is in WVT.

By following Shanedog's post, I can now see what are in "Documents and
Settings" and they appear identical to what are in "Users" folder. I
wonder what is the purpose of this folder.

There are still many sub-folder in "Documents and Settings" which are
unaccesible and the same name sub-folders in "Users" are also unaccessible.

Hello,

Documents and Settings is simply a junction that points to the Users folder,
as Chad pointed out. There are also a few sub-folders inside of the Users
folder that are junctions, such as the All Users folder.

These folders appear with a "ghosted" icon and a shortcut symbol, and are
only visible if you enable show hidden files. As i said, these are junctions
and are not meant to be double-clicked on - they are just there to enable
older applications to function properly. You will need to learn the new
location for these folders - if you are familiar with command prompt, you
can type "dir /a" to see the junctions, and the folder that they point to
will be shown in brackets.
