I am planning to purchase a new Dell computer next month with the Vista
Business edition. I am trying to gain some basic knowledge about the OS
program, especially that of backup and restore. So far, don't see any
problems with the image backup function since I now use such a program on my
current Dell computer. However, I am a bit confused in how Vista backs up
files. Best as I can determine, you can only select, not files for folders,
but file extensions. If this is incorrect, I would appreciate any help in
determining how Vista backs up files on a computer.

I would like to have the capability to accomplish file backups by selecting
specific folders so that only those files in these folder will be backed
up.. Can this be done with Vista file backup? Would very much appreciate
any clarification regarding my questions. Thanks, Sam.

Would like to answer your question but I have a HP laptop (new) with Vista
Business and can't back up at all - neither files or the PC. After many
hours on the phone and internet researching problem I have returned the unit
to the supplier for reimaging. Maybe that will work. All I can say is check
it before you buy. If this is a Vista problem stay with XP.

Many thanks for your reply. After my posting, I have done some additional
research and am finding that the Vista backups, especially the one for
files, leave a lot to be desired. Based upon my current research ( and this
could change) it appears that the backup program that I will use with my new
computer, will be the StorageCraft ShadowProtect Desktop Edition. So far, I
have found many positive comments and no negative aspects regarding this
Image and file backup program. Best wishes, Sam.
