virusy pattern in Outlook Express

For almost a month my Outlook Express has been plagued by
a siege of e-mails all coming from one or more Microsoft
impostors claiming to offer some kind of critical
security patch. The subject line always changes. usually
the downloading of my e-mails will include scores of
these messages, with half a dozen interruptions along the
way from a Norton Anti-Virus Summary pop-up screen
claiming that 8 or 3 files have been scanned and
requiring that the "Finished" box be clicked in order to
continue downloading. Also the Norton "Scanning outgoing
message for viruses" window pops up even though I've not
sent any messages.

i've done symantec's full-scale virus scan a couple of
times and it claims the computer is virus-free. What
could be causing this obnoxiousness, and what can be done
to stop it?

Thank you very much for your answer. Symantec is useless
for customer support, unless you're willing to pay them a
fortune.

Nothing can stop it. You can set various messages rules to automatically
delete the emails but that's about it.

Regarding email scanning by Norton. Turn it OFF. Even Norton have admitted
it is unnecessary:

I appreciate your knowledgeable reply, even though the
news wasn't good.

Please suggest message rules that would automatically
delete this. As I mentioned, the idiot behind this
spends his time constantly altering the subject line.

also, the message rules feature of OE has proven the
least successful function of any MS product I've ever
used. even when clearly set with simple rules it will
often fail to block or delete the messages. at least that
was true prior to my giving up on that feature almost a
year ago. BG should put more resources into fixing that.

Thx,
JT

One thing I have noticed about these viruses is they rarely have my email
address in the <to> field. So create a message rule that if a message does
*not* contain <your email address>, move to deleted items folder.
