viruses on webpages

Can one get a computer virus just by viewing a webpage?

Recently I had the ActiveShield on and was surprised when it had
deleted a trojan just by viewing a webpage.

I don't like to keep it on all the time since it slows the computer
down on my slow computer.

Get a better lower resource hungry anti virus application. AVG is free
and works well. Other people will recommend other applications.

Dump IE and use Mozilla.

OK, I am trying out AVG. It seems nice. Do you think I'll notice it
slowing up my 300MHz computer?

I've been using Opera since v5 and I'm a happy camper. Opera is
currently up to v7.11, with v7.2 in beta and soon to be released.
It's much faster on older, less powerful computers (like mine) than
Mozilla/Firebird. Smaller too. The latest download is just over 3mb
