BIG MOUTH

Well, it finally happened,I got a virus, several bugs and
my browser is being hijacked. That's what I get for being
such a smart a** and saying I'd never had anything.
Nothing came in my emails , but probably I visited some
websites that I should'nt have.
I used AdAware and got rid of the virus (I think ) and
used Hijack this to take care of the bugs/hijacker, but
the bugs/hijacker keeps coming back.
Went to Panda and Symantic and did a virus sweep and came
out clean, though Symantic said I have two ports closed,
but not stelthed ,by my Router.
Since, I added zone alarm which I had removed after
getting the new XP Home,Router and Cable internet.

The problem is that I'm not computer savvy and can't use
most of the information that Hijack This gives me. I have
deleted some obvious things in the report, but they keep
coming back , so there must be things there that need
deleting ,that I'm missing.
The Hijacker seems to be connected to Cool Web Search, but
I deleted that , and then got blank, for a home page, so
I manually changed back to Yahoo!, a few times.

I'm not sure if there is enough info here for anyone to
work with, so any assistance with this would be
appreciated. I guess I do not really know the questions
to ask, to get an intelligent reply. So just give it your
best shot and we'll take it from there.

AdAware gets rid of adware, spyware etc. It does not get rid of viruses. An
up to date antivirus scanner is needed for that.

You haven't really given us much information to make any suggestions. You
could the following places for anything that you don't recognize :
Add/Remove Programs
Windows\Downloaded Programs
Start> Run> MSCONFIG
Task Manager.

Also, for a quick online check for adware, spyware, hijackers and other
nasties:

http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.htm

Once you can identify what you've picked up, there are links on the page
above that lead to doxdesk.com, a site well-known for documenting various
parasites.

Another good resource site: http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/

Sharon F.;
Thanks for your reply. I'll try the places you outlined
and get back to you.
As you pointed out, the virus I deleted with AVG, not Ad-
aware. I'm afraid I'm just not knowledgable enough to
make full use of Hijack This since there are probably
some things that are masked as legitimate entries picked
up and look enough like the original that I can't take a
chance on deleting them.
In all I have used Ad-aware,Spybot S&D,AVG,Hijack
This,BHO Daemon,Panda and Symantic.
AVG did find and delete one virus. I have deleted some
things that were obvious using Hijack This (porno
sites),but it offered many more things that looked to be
Okay, but I cannot be sure.
My homepage is still being hijacked and the deleted
websites reappear at each logon,so I'm missing something.
Really appreciate your assistance and will get back to
you.

You're welcome and good luck. Some extra suggestions for you:

- I believe there is a user forum for Hijack This. The moderators will
guide you through the entire process of working with the log that
program produces.

- Don't forget that working in Safe Mode is a good way to get at these
things for full removal. During a normal Windows session, the items may
already be running and more difficult to remove. Doing your "surgery" in
Safe Mode, where no extras load, can be more effective.

I took your advice concerning the user forum for Hijack
This and as soon as I get my nerve up will go into safe
mode as you suggest, after first getting advice and
guidance from the forum at Hijack This.
As always , your advice and sugestions are right on
target. Without you and the other MVPs from this
newsgroup, I and many others would struggle in vain with
no place to turn.
And as a post script -- I have taken your advice in the
past, and do use OE for MS newsgroups. I posted on the
web this time due to a total loss of brain function.
I also do not usually post with "BIG MOUTH", however
given the circumstances ,I thought it appropriate.
Just wanted to post back to express my gratitude and will
now let you get on to more important matters.

You're most welcome and thank you for the kind words. When I was new to
Windows, plenty of folks in the newsgroups helped me along. Now I try to
repay those kindnesses by helping where I can (while still learning as that
process never stops!) Once again, good luck with this project!
