I have virusburst flashing in the bottom right of the screen and clicking on
it brings up the virusburst website. I have checked all the registry
settings as advised by Don DD but there are no entries for any of them. How
is this spyware operating and how can I get rid of it ?

virusburst

VirusBurst is a anti-spyware program that is known to issue fake warnings on
your computer in order to manipulate you into buying its full commercial
version. The program is generally installed by a Trojan that automatically
downloads and installs the program.

VirusBurst is one of the most widely spread threats to Internet users. It’s
a trojan that tricks the user into purchasing a corrupt anti-spyware program,
which is a clone of Spyware Quake and other rogue products. The parasite is
similar to its predecessors. It shows annoying blinking icon in the system
tray that says that your system is infected with spyware and malware.
Clicking on that icon takes you on a web site selling the VirusBurst program

You didn't say if you ran a complete WD scan and tried removing it that way.
However, Spybot S & D does detect VirusBurst. If Spybot can't get rid of it,
I would run a complete anti-virus scan followed by anti-spyware programs
Ewido and SuperAntiSpyware.
