I have a virus that seems to have hijacked my dial up internet connection. It
won't let me log on to microsoft sites and keeps turning off my auto updates.
It also adds an internet connection of its own "z-cnnect".I keep getting a
msg telling me to download registry updates from www.restorefix.com.
I have re installed windows so am now back to xp sp1. Also I am unable to re
format my hard drive.
Grateful for any assistance.

Hello Lucy:

If you are still infected, it probably /would/ be best to reformat your
hard disk drive before re-installing Windows XP.

According to some Internet resources, of course
<hxxp:www.restorefix.com> does *NOT* have a good reputation.

If you have access to the service pack 3 update CD, do update at your
soonest convenience after system re-installation. If you don't have
access, you may request an update CD from Microsoft:

That isn't a virus, it's malware. Try posting in m.p.security.homeusers.
You'll need to be more specific about "unable to reformat my hard drive".

Lucy - It sounds like you are trying to install Windows from within itself.
You can't do this. You need to boot the computer from the XP install CD
isntead. You would not be getting a message if you were booting directly
from the CD. Either review the instructions at the links below OR take the
computer to a competent local computer tech. There is no shame in doing
this; I don't hesitate to take my car to the mechanic. If you go this
route, I don't recommend using a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

Hi Malke
Thanks for your response. Good advice and no I am not too proud to use a
professional. I am hesistant to say that I have fixed the problem(I'm not
100%convinced). I ran malwarebytes that seemed to clean everything up and
then re installed from the cd.
Thanks again for your advice.
