What is a good Free virus program? I've had it with McAfee, it uses way to
many resources, and is getting too expensive for me...

I have three different computers running Windows OneCare.
In over 2 years, no system has been infected with malware,
spyware or viruses. I highly recommend using it.

You can try it FREE for 90 days.

Take the advice of Bruce and/or PA Bear.
Forget about Windows OneCare. It has one of the worst track records in the anti virus
industry and what's worse (based upon your requirements) -- it is NOT free.

Thanks every one!! Great help... I was afraid I would get tons of "off
topic" replies...

The OP asked for a free AV, not a POS like No Care.

Getting rid of McAfee is an excellent thing to do. Next to Norton,
it's probably the worst choice available. There are three free
antivirus programs with excellent reputations: Avast, Avira AntiVir,
and AVG. I use Avast on my XP machines and like it a lot.

After you're done removing McAfee and installing a new (free) AV product,
would you mind scanning your PC? Come back and let us know if it finds
anything McAfee can't detect.

Btw, I use Avira Antivir (the free version) and quite happy with it. I'm
testing Avast (also free version) on my notebook. What I like about Avast is
that it has a boot time scan. It scans my notebook before it gets to Windows
GUI. I'm not sure how effective the boot time scan is.

One of the things I like best about Avast is that you can set it to do
a scan every time the screen saver runs. Since that's when you're not
using the computer anyway, it's the perfect time to do it
automatically.

One of things I don't like about Avast are situations like when it took 2 months to remove a
False Positive declaration of VBS:Zulu on some Microsoft web pages. That was AFTER Avast
was notified of the False Positive declaration.

Why should I..."Install in Custom Installation and under Resident
Protection, uncheck:
Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange."...?

Good for you. I use and like Avast.

Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange.

After you rid yourself of McAfee via Add/Remove, use this tool to get the
hidden crap off your system.

McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool:

You don't have to do that, it's just more efficient to do that. Since Avast
already scans everything on your computer you are just using up more
resources. The term is redundant.

It found no viruses or anything. It seems to work silently and only uses 3
resources, not 10-14 like McAfee did, and the price was going up to almost
$50 per year. I
I'll it for a while Thanks all

With some AV programs, simply unchecking e-mail scanning is no enough. It
still leaves its hooks in OE. Better not to install it at all. E-mail
scanning has even been known to wipe out entire message stores. OE doesn't
like it no matter what AV program you use.

$50?!?! Yikes! There are many other free AV products that can do a better
job than McAfee. Good to know you've switched to another (better) AV
product. Hope it works well. Thanks for taking the time to post an update.
