Hi everyone.

I host a private website, and by statistics, etc. I have discovered that somebody is tracking one of my client's computers' webbrowser. What kind of virus/tracker would you suppose this to be.

Here is a description of what is happening. My user logs on to the site, and downloaded a file (supposed to be private), and somebody else (from a different country) downloaded the file right afterwords. They did not find the file by a search engine. It was a "direct hit". I find this rather unusual, and I would like to inform my client that he is being "hacked", as well as information of how to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated!

Joe

Your client appreciated the file and gave the url to one of his friends. This sounds by far a more likely explanation.

Thanks, Mariane, for the suggestion. I happen to know the client and the file. This is not a file that he would have shared number one, and number two, he wouldn't want to share ANY files with someone from any "foreign" country.

Therefore, I conclude that he has some sort of virus/weblogger/BrowserTracker or something.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I feel stupid telling him that there is a virus or whatever on his computer, and that I don't know what to do about it or what exactly it is doing. I would have to be rather vague (as I was in the original post because I don't know much about what this thing is.

Anyways, thanks again for the suggestion.

you'll need to run a barrage of scans, virus, malware, trojan, spyware etc as well as highjackthis

once you've identified what the system as been infected with you can go about removing it

Thanks, Me_2001, for the reply. What I was wondering was what kind of virus would this likely be? What should I tell my client? How can I explain that I found some sort of ?virus?, but I don't really know what it is or whether it is dangerous. All I know is that somebody is tracking their browsing. I do not know what to tell them to look for. My client is not necessarily very "computer literate", and visiting him might not be simple. (He's ALWAYS busy, and so am I...)

If you would know anything about what this is, or what I should tell my client, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Joe
