What are a few early symptoms that might indicate a machine might be
inffefected? Note I did spell check this but at present I can't delete any
character and make correctios. Sorry. Is this a sign of infection or is
there a fix for lost ability to delete? All recent anti-virus scans have
come up clean.

What does that mean? Can you put the cursor on the character? Can you move
the cursor with the mouse? Can you move it with the arrow keys? What happens
when you press delete? What happens when you press backspace? What happens
when you type a character there?

How long has this been going on? Have you rebooted since it began? Have you
tried to restore to a Restore Point created before this started?

Responding to Ken Blake. Can I put the cursor on the character, yes. The
cursor moves by the mouse, yes. Also, arrow keys move, yes. Nothing happens
when the delete key is press. Backspace will erase. So I can finish a
phrase and if an error is noted I can back space (deleting as I go) to the
error. Also the left arrow key allows for a return to the error without
deleting. Then, backspace to delete the incorrect character and type the
correction to insert.
First occurred a few days ago and I have had several reboots since then.
Restored to a point prior to the problem and this did not correct the
problem.
ps: corrections made in the spell checker dialog box function okay.

Does the delete key work anywhere at all? Say, in Notepad?

Chances are good that it's a hardware problem, corrected by replacing the
keyboard. If you've got access to another one you can borrow briefly,
you'll know for sure in a few minutes.

Dumb question, but have you tried a Restart to see if that will stop the
problem?

Responding to Patrick Keenan--Delete key works fine in Microsoft Word. Keyed
in a string of characters, moved cursor to the left with the mouse (or arrow
key) and the delete key deleted all the charcaters back to the cursor.

So the problem is just using the delete key? You say "corrections made in
the spell checker dialog box function okay." Is that in Outlook Express? Do
you mean that the delete key works there? What about other applications? Are
the delete key problems in all applications, or just in OE?

If the problem are just in OE, I have no suggestions other than recommending
you ask your question in an OE newsgroup instead of here.

If the problems are in all applications, I would suspect a problem with your
keyboard. Borrow one from a friend and see if that fixes it. If it does,
return it, and replace yours.

And to answer your original question, I very much doubt that this has
anything to do with a virus.
