Ad-Aware does nothing at all to protect you from virii or any other sort
of attack. You need, at least, a firewall (either hardware or software)
and an anti-virus program. Zone Alarm Free works well for the former and
either AVG Free or Avast! work well for the latter. Being behind a NAT
router helps to shield the computer from the outside world but you
neglect to give any information about how you are connecting to the
Internet.

I use Spybot, as it provides 'immunity' to some knowns spywares (I
think it works... nevery had a huge breakout of them in a while). I
also believe using Spywareblaster helps. These two, so far, has
protected me quite well. Also, a firewall never hurts... Zonealarm is
good. The Pro version is even better, with added spyware control

You have NO anti-virus protection at the moment! I would IMMEDIATELY
install Norton Anti-virus 2006.

A wise person would never install Norton or McAffee. NOD, Avast, Trend
Micro are all better choices.

For virii, worms, trojans:
AntiVir (free) http://majorgeeks.com/download955.html
For adware, spyware and browser hijackers:
SpyBot Search & Destroy (free)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (free)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en
choose "Continue".
Each of these 3 ad/spyware scanners (I'm including AdAware which
you now have) can find malware the others miss.
Turn on the shields in MS AntiSpyware and SpyBot (Imunization)
Use Firefox as your default browser and IE only when you have to.
Firefox v1.5 (free) http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

MS firewall only monitors incoming traffic and will not warn you if
malware is attempting to call out.
Go offline, toggle the MS firewall OFF and install this:
ZoneAlarm v6.1.737.000 (free)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html

All of the above programs work very well and are free.
