Virus Spam

I posted a question here with my real email address and
have since been bombarded with virus emails claiming to be
the Microsoft update. Is this typical?

This would happened to you if you posted to *any newsgroup* on any public
server. I, too, learned the hard way about using a real email address in
newsgroups.
As a start, change your email in all public news accounts to a bogus one.
However, as the cat is already out of the bag, see if you can change your
real address through your ISP. A pain, I know, but the only way to stop the
bleeding.
