Virus scan software

I get fed up with Antivirus software being outdated and
not being able to get updates after a period of time.

I have noticed several free virus scan programs on the
web, such as pctool's webdoctor, and Panda active scan.

Has anyone had success with these, and are they 'safe' to
use to do an occassional virus scan?
