virus scan slows Powerpoint load

I've a new portable with Office 2003. Seems fine, except Powerpoint loads large files real slowly secondary to the mandatory virus scan. I turned off such scan in my prior portable (with Powerpoint 2002), but have since forgotten how I did it (the portable has Norton Systemworks, but I think this is an Office command line, not Norton).
 
The virus scan is a function of Norton Antivirus. It is an MS Office option
and it can be turned off. Here is a webpage at Microsoft's site that
