Can anyone, in simple language, explain how to get rid of a virus manually?

Boot your computer in a mode that allows you to access the Disk and
system without running the OS, or as limited as possible, remove
offending files.

How about you take the easy way out, download one of the dozens of
Quality malware removal tools and use them following the instructions
instead of trying to do it by hand.

The following links will take you to vendors sites for Spy Ware / Ad
ware removal tools and also for Antivirus tools. After you install any
of these applications and update them, run them in SAFE MODE to allow
them to properly clean your system.

These sites are for downloading Anti-Malware and Anti-Spyware tools, in
order that I would use them myself:

Since you haven't told us what virus NAV says must be removed manually,
we can't help you. Symantec may have manual instructions for the virus'
removal. Put the name of the virus into the Search Threats box here:

Different viruses will have different removal procedures.
You should contact Norton.
Search for the virus name here:

You should get the detailed information you need there.
Or
Post to the correct newsgroup:

You will need to post more details such as:
Exact message you get
Virus name
Etc.

Maybe you could provide more information - Norton will also have online
help at www.symantec.com where you can enter the name of the virus that
Norton detected and it will tell you how to remove it.

Manually means a couple things, like booting into safe mode and running
the AV software again...

It could also mean downloading a special utility from Symantec to remove
the malware...

How about you tell us what virus Norton says you have and we'll get you
some help.

When you don't provide enough information in the initial trouble post we
have to go back and forth wasting valuable time.
 
It is a Trojan virus. Norton gives instructions
on how to get rid of it but they are so complicated that I couldn't follow
them. That's why I asked for an easier way to do it.

I'm sorry but if you can't follow Symantec's instructions (and there is
no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), then take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local version
of BigStoreUSA). Removing viruses/malware can be very complex and there
is no way around that.

If you can't follow their instructions the do yourself a favor and take
it to someone that can.

There is no shame in admitting, even to us, that you can't handle it,
many others can't do it either.

After it's fixed, you really need to understand how you got infected and
how to prevent it again.
 
trojan means it phones home.wins xp firewall dosn't stop out going
virus.download seagate firewall v5 (make sure its v5 not v1) free turn off
wins firewall install seagate at lest the virus will have a pain calling
home.restart pc as its starting
hold down control key on key board.puts u in safe mode.click start, click
search,
click for files or folders, in that box in "search for files" typ the name
of virus u will
see it in right hand box,right click it with mouse click delete.
