I was thinking of installing Mcafee or Norton Anti Virus on my computer
running XP, but have read very poor reports from customers on Amazon for
both items. Does anyone here have any comments or recommendations?

I'll echo Bob's response (gosh! a question I can answer!)

I tested McAfee, and found it slowed my machine to a crawl. Of course,
that was an older machine, running Win98SE, but XP users also
mentioned such stuff(ing).

I also used Norton AntiVirus for some time - just short of a year,
till the dealer who installed a second hard drive suggested I try AVG
instead. He said it uses far fewer system resources than NAV (Norton
AntiVirus). I found AVG's performance really excellent, and I gave NAV
back to the person who had given it to me.

The free version of AVG is excellent; the paid version is astounding
and wonderful. With the free version, I'd make sure to configure it to
"use heuristics."

The cost for the paid version is currently $33.30 US - for a two-year
licence. Excellent price.

And you can still use the Symantec site to learn about viruses.

Hi

AVG has kept my systems free of viruses for several years. There is a free
version along with free updates:

Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
Version: 6.0.596 / Virus Database: 379 - Release Date: 26/02/2004

Errr, Will -

Here is Bob's outgoing certification message from earlier in this
thread:

Bob seems to be using a later virus database than yours. Wouldn't you
care to update yours?

The viruses and worms coming out since 26/02/2004 appear quite scary!
(Wow, an MVP who is so busy helping out he apparently forgets to
update his AVG?) <g>

I have my reasons for not updating that partition.

I've used EzAntivirus for several years and am very happy with it.
Currently, MS and Etrust are offering one year's free subscription for the
ArmorAll suite (includes antivirus, firewall and additional email scanner):

Oh! I should have thought, if you didn't update theAVG virus database,
you do indeed have your reasons! Silly of me to think otherwise!

And in your next post, when I said:

you added:

Well, I really should have guessed! Shame on me. I apologize if I cast
any aspersions.I didn't intend to; all the same, I at least suggested
an unwarranted assumptio Ithough I believe I left room for its being
unwarranted)..

I guess, too, if you wanted to share your reasons, you would, so I'll
retire as gracefully as possible from this subject <g>.

(Apologizing profusely.)

Greetings --

When my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton Internet
Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost substantially higher than
last year's subscription), I decided to try less expensive solutions.
I downloaded and installed the free version of GriSoft's AVG
(http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ) and the free version of
Sygate's Personal Firewall ( http://smb.sygate.com/free/default.php ).
Both have proven to be easily installed, easy to use, and quite
effective. Additionally, and in answer to your question, I was
pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable improvement in
my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec product.

It's been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee
products. Their quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they
were acquired by Network Associates.

I also use EzAntivirus and have nothing but good things to say about it.
They also are very helpful if you do run into problems which I did when I
didn't keep my system up to date with MS updates and got the Blaster Worm
which I was having trouble getting rid of on my own. They gave me step by
step procedures which worked like a charm. I might add, the help came in a
matter of hours not days.

I second that, eTrust EZ Anti-Virus works brilliantly, but off course
a firewall will enhance whichever Anti-Virus program you choose.

I have used McAfee VirusScan for ages and never complained about it.
It wasn`t slow or anything either, except for a full disk scan which
does take time anyway. No complaints.
