Hi john, sorry to hear you still having such problems;
Windows Defender has no red popup for monitoring anti-spyware or anti-virus
on your system as far as I know. I believe what you're seeing is the
Windows Security Center that's telling you that, not Defender. When we get
another Vista user, maybe Engle/dean-dean, to look here, perhaps he can get
you squared away with running elevated privilege. I know Engel had some
problems with his first attempt under Vista.
)
The security center should recognize Kaspersky as well as any other
A-V/A-S/Firewall unless it's been substituted by an alternative, as for
instance Norton's has done in the past although I don't think they still
are and I've not heard of Kaspersky doing that either.
Here's the relevant docs on the UAC access to the command prompt requiring
specific elevated privilege beyond just admin. in Vista if it helps:
User Account Control Settings
Starting with Windows Vista, Under User Account Control (UAC) access token
filtering can affect which operations are allowed in WMI namespaces or what
data is returned. Under UAC, all accounts in the local Administrators
group, run with a standard user access token, also known as UAC access
token filtering. An administrator account can run a script with elevated
privilege-"Run as Administrator".
That information was referenced from the Winmgmt documentation for Vista
here:

No success. It just says, "Access denied"
I'm sure you understand what the problem is. I already have Kaspersky
Internet Security which already has anti-spyware and virus protection,
but
Windows Defender pops up in red showing that spyware and other malware
protection is not monitored and virus protection is not found. When I
would
try to turn either on, it doesn't let me.
Thanks.

I read back through our posts and I missed "Access Denied" in your
second
post. Can we try that again starting at "verifyrepository". When you
run
the command prompt you have to right click the shortcut and chose run as
an
administrator (UAC) providing the password I believe... I'm still on XP,
sorry for my lack of Vista experience. If it comes back and tells you
the
repository is inconsistent then proceed with "salvagerepository".

Ok, I resatrted the computer, and it continues to show that "Windows
Defender
is turned off" which I can't turn on, I but I already have an
anti-spyware
through Kaspersky Internet Security, and Virus protection not found,
which I
also alerady have through Kaspersky Internet Security. the funny thing
is I
have the same Kaspersky running in the laptop and there are no
problems,
but
with the desktop it's a problem.

You'll have to re-boot the system yourself for your new database to
become
active. You're welcome... let us know if Defender is up to date as
well.
Here are the current "About Windows Defender" version levels:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2803.0
Definition Version: 1.21.2840.5

Ok, I did that. It shows what each of these does
/verifyrepository [<path>]
/salvagerepository
/resetrepository
but that's it. computer did not restart.
Thanks

OK, no problem, you have a corrupted WMI database that needs
rebuilding...
that's the shared info area that various security programs use to
interface
to the system as far as monitoring their status goes, and it's
fairly
common at least on Vista... LOL
Run this command (again as an administrator): winmgmt
/salvagerepository
The first time you run this it will fail. It will issue stop
commands
to
the services causing it to fail. It might take a couple minutes for
the
services to shut down. Run the command again. Sometimes it takes
up
to
5 tries before it finally completes on its own.
Reboot your system, and you should be OK.
Let us know how you make out.

I have Kaspersky Internet Security. When I did the cmd prompt, the
description reads "WMI repository verification failed ... Access
denied"
Thanks.

You didn't mention which software program provides your Anti-Virus
protection, but if you really have that installed, and you believe
it's
running, and you feel that the protection center is reporting
incorrectly,
and you're running Vista as your OS, then try this :
Run a cmd prompt as administrator.
Enter the following command: winmgmt /verifyrepository
which checks the integrity of the WMI database and let us know the
results.
If your on XP the above command won't work however.
Windows Defender does not provide Anti-Virus protection.

the Virus protection under Malware protection shows that it is
"Not
monitored" but I already have Internet Security which has virus
protection.
When I would try to change it to "Monitor now" just to see if I
would
get
anywhere with that, Internet Explorer would appear "Windows Vista
Security
Software Providers" recommending that I install security software
which
I
already have. It is running and shows there are no problems, but
Windows
Security Center insists that I have none.
