Am reasonable certain a virus is preventing me from
logging on to my Windows 2000 Pro workstation. It's a
home PC with a dial-up web connection. All I can do is to
log on in "Safe Mode".

Does anyone know if virus scanning software can be
installed while in Safe Mode?

Thanks to all,

Nope nothing can be installed in safe mode.

What makes you think it's a VIRUS??
more detail is needed.
if you can only logon in safe mode, that I suggest you
must have installed something new, the system doesn't
like, and you can do a last know good configuration/boot.

or enter in safe mode and remove the last thing you
installed, I haven't heard of a virus that prevents you
from loggin on in normal mode, again more details are
needed.

Some software can be installed in safe mode. It may not be a virus, but
could be a conflict with a startup program [including a
virus]/service/driver. Try booting into safemode with networking to see if
you can access the internet and download msconfig [search Google for
"download msconfig"] . Run msconfig and disable startup programs and
services which should allow you to boot into regular mode. You will have to
use trial and error, starting with applications, to see what is causing the
problem. An unusual entry for startup programs could be your virus. ---
