I have gotten a virus I believe and now my operating system won'y open. How
do I solve this problem?
Thanks,

Hi Jacquie,

What virus? What happens when you try to start Windows?

reformat re install it's the best solution

You must work for some computer's technical service department there the
only ones that are so quick to suggest reformating and reinstalling.

Because it requires less work on their part and the majority of them don't
know a thing about computers to begin with.

A buddy of mine worked for Packard Bell (oops, a swear word) years ago, he
didn't even own a computer and never had owned one!

Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus used to come with a floppy
that would scan your drive during startup, not sure if
that is still around...
-- Without being able to get into the OS, you might be in
a pickle. If you have another computer WITH "UP TO DATE"
virus protection, you can add the drive to that system and
scan it. Other then that you may need to start fresh
(i.e. clean install)

That is what the manufacturer of my computer wanted me to do when the
XP restore didn't work. It would try to restore to a previous point,
but after running something for a while it gave me a "cannot restore
to that point". I tried like 8 restore points, same thing. She
didn't even consider that I was on dial up at the time and updates
took forever, or even just what a hassle it was to re-install
everything else.. She didn't have me try much before she suggested
it. Well, I never did re-install. I think later, I just went &
turned it off (it deleted all restore points) and then I restarted it
again. I also shrunk down the size of the % of the HD it was set at
to use for restore points (way too much).

It might now work, or might not. I don't know. I have never had to
try and use it again... I bought Norton Ghost and backed up my system
just in case...

They do his because, unless the issues are hardware related, reinstalling
almost always solves the problem with no work on their part. Unfortunately
there is a lot of work on the part of the op and it's almost never the
necessary step to solve the problem. It's just the easiest advice to give by
somebody who knows little or nothing about computers.
