Virus or what?

I have a PC that is VERY slow starting, apps do not run or
they hang. I tried the repair installation and after
everything was done, it came up the same way. This time,
however, I waited and eventually, I got 45 7001 events
source: Service Control Manager and 21 7022 events same
source. They all deal with services that "hung in a start-
pending state" and "hung on starting" and all came in at
the same time. After that, I was able to manually start
many of the services and the computer is running now, but
will not if I reboot it. Does anyone have any ideas on
what may be wrong here? I was going to try and install a
current copy of my virus software and scan it before I try
rebooting. I can't even paste things after I copy them
when this is happenening, so all I can think to do is
reformat and reinstall everything and lose my data. FYI -
While running, I was able to create a restore point, but
this feature does not work when the problems arise.
PLEASE HELP! Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Other symptoms:
No Start menu or taskbar upon starting.
Any Word docs opened - Doc could not be registered warning
Any Excel books opened - Cannot use object linking and
embedding

Good idea. Be sure that your antivirus program is set to start with Windows,
and have it run in the background at all times to give you real-time
antivirus protection. Configure your antivirus program to provide maximum
security and update the virus signatures weekly, at least.

Every computer should be sold with a sticker affixed that reads "Don't even
think of using a computer without antivirus software."
