I had posted a couple of days ago about my adult son
searching through porn sites, and in doing so, had picked
up a virus.
I run symantec Norton Antivirus 2003. A system scan
returned a virus that was corrected .. "EICAR test file".
Shows it was deleted and no further action needed. Did
not indicate any further viruses.
I ran trial run of McAfee. and it found
2 "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM 32\windialup\3393\3393.exe"
and "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\3393.exe" The
descriptive of the trial scan by McAfee suggested
subscribe to its software and led me to believe the
problems could be fixed (for $39.93)
Information regarding when viruses are found in Norton
AntiVirus indicates going into the registry and making
changes and deleting other files..something I should
probably take to a tech to do (over my head and I don't
want to tinker with the Registry)
My question ... is McAfee actually able to repair what it
finds, or will I still end up having to make changes in
the Registry ?
Should I cease ALL activity on the pc or is it possible
that everything could be contaminated.
Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated.

1. Do not install or run two different types of antivirus software
at the same time....they will conflict with each other.

2. Eliminating the actual virus file may not undo the damage
actually caused by the virus. In many cases, only a reformat
of the drive and reinstall of Windows XP will be the cure.

Actually 2 is a very extreme case and not the frequent answer. There are many
ways to clean/restore files without having to reformat the drive

Thanks for the responses ..
I installed the eTrust Antivirus v7 and ran it. It
showed only 1 hit, same one as Symantec NAV "EICAR test
file", but showed the "status" as "No cure for this
infection" .. which is the only one found by NAV (NAV
disabled it.>-----Original Message-----

The EICAR test file is not a virus. It's a test file (that AV software
think is a virus) used to test the software. But it's not a virus and you
don't need to remove it unless you want to.
