My PC was infected with a virus yesterday. McAfee removed
the virus but when I rebooted, Windows said a system file
had been replaced and asked if it should put the original
back. I clicked Yes but then it asked for my Service Pack
1 disk which I didn't even think I had so I clicked Cancel-
-it gave me no other option. Today I found my SP1 disk but
how do I get Windows to ask me again if it should replace
the corrupted system file.
Apparently Task Manager relies on the corrupted system
file so no longer runs. Thanks.

Gene,
The CD I have is labeled "Dell Reinstallation CD XP Pro
including Service Pack 1" and Windows doesn't accept it
when sfc asks for the CD. It says it's the wrong CD I
guess because it's from Dell rather than Microsoft.

I have a friend who has XP Pro and I copied taskmgr.exe
from his system to mine and Task Manager is working again.
So as far as I can tell my system is back to normal and
McAfee says it's virus free.

I will see about ordering SP1 from Microsoft and trying
what you suggested again in case this ever happens again.
Thanks.
