I am using Windows 2000. Yesterday I discovered an inflected file called down.exe. But when the time it was discovered my Nortion Anti-Virus had not been updated and the virus couldn't been killed. I just deleted the file. And then I visited the windows update web page and installed all the updates.

Did I do anything wrong? Did I delete something unnecessarily?

Probably not. Windows keeps copies of critical system files in the
\winnt\system32\dllcache folder which is hidden by default and running sfc
/scannow will check for missing/bad files. I would be sure to run another virus
scan, scan all of your emails, and keep your critical updates current. Read the
link below on securing your computer. --- Steve
