While performing a routine scan AVG picked up a type of Trojan, when I tried
to see what it said the desktop disappeared then came back minus AVG. Tried
a full scan and nothing found. BUT, when I click on an application or try
to run regedit, something (Trojan?) closes the application.
How can I find out what it is?
How can I remove it?

Thanks

1) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
2) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
3) Using your AVG software, perform a Full Scan of your platform and clean/delete any
infectors found
4) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform
5) If you are using WinME or WinXP,Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 200 ~ 400MB),
reboot your PC.
6) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point
7) Please report back your results

Dave

It's a virus. Do a google for this phrase: free online virus scan. There are
several available. If it's any help: I hads the very same thing. It's called
Agobot.gen3 and is a backdoor trojan. Mine was a 24 hour bug. Try
disconnecting the ethernet cable or your phone line. It doesn't like that at
all.

24 hours after it first showed up, it went away.

a trojan is not necessarily a virus...

with all due respect, just because you had something with seemingly
similar symptoms it doesn't mean it's the exact same piece of malware

and that's just absurd...
24 hours after it first showed up, it went away.

when someone is sufficiently unaware of what's going on in a computer,
unexpected/unintentional/accidental events can seem almost like magic...

Safe mode came up with nothing, but on re-booting into windows and scanning
it came up as Downloader.stubby.A
AVG found it and deleted it.
I will now be searching the net to find out what it will have left behind.
