I heard something about that online games can cause virus from other
people's PC to enter through your ports and bypass Norton. Is this true? I
have a router so really don't matter to me.

Hi Iby,

You can't catch a virus without downloading and installing it.

What you're worried about is someone exploiting a vulnerability
which you haven't yet patched through windows updates, and
the update sites for the various other software you have on your
system.

The fear mongers are warning you that when you play online you
expose your IP address to your opponent and they will try to
attack you. That's true, but with the standard security upgrades
you are not vulnerable even if you aren't running a firewall.

Keep an active virus scanner with updated virus definition files
running on your system, with a firewall, and you'll be fine. Even
if you have to open some ports specifically for a game, it's not a
big deal. After all, every hacker knows that port 80 (http internet)
is wide open on 99.999% of users machines out there anyways. :-)

But if your behind a router (like me) then you dont have to worry so much
about direct hacking attempts- thats thanks to the NAT, and the DCHP giving
the wrong end of the stick to hackers.
