I have an MMX233 with 32 meg memory that I keep as a spare. I have Norton
2003 on it but the system runs slowly. Is there something as good that I can
use that will not be such a drag on the system. The free version of
Kaspesrky slowed it down even more.

Try the free version of Avast! or maybe AVG. I don't think they are quite as
good as Norton in overall protection, but they are probably sufficient, esp if
you practice Safe Hex.
PS: be sure to uninstall Norton completely.

I'm looking for an anti virus program that I can use with Win 95 without
slowing my old machine down to a standstill. I find that both avast and avg
are too memory consuming to allow the machine to function properly.

Any ideas anyone?

I downloaded the Home version of Avast last night and realised that I had
tried it about a year ago and found it cumbersome to use. As the next poster
found it seemed to use a lot of my small amount of memory.

I doubt you'll find anything that will not take a significant portion of
your 32 megs of RAM. If you intend to keep that system going, and you can
add RAM, I would go that route. Find out the type of RAM it uses, and the
maximum RAM your motherboard/operating system will recognize, and buy more.
It probably uses the old 72 pin EDO ram, that you can still buy for very
little money. I'll bet you could move up to 256 meg for less than $40.00.

1.) As someone else suggested, add more RAM. Your old PC will run a
whole lot better with 128MB of memory.

2.) F-Prot for Windows works pretty well and only costs $29.00 USD. The
license allows you to run it on several PCs.

3.) NOD32 also uses very few resources.

4.) Uninstall Norton AV completely including Live Reg and Live Update
through Add/Remove in Control Panel.

I have F-Prot for Windows on an old Win95B system and it works pretty
well. It only costs $29.00 USD. The license allows you to run it on
several PCs.

NOD32 is better, uses very few resources but I don't know how well it
will run on Win95.

???128 Meg of ram???
An absolute minimum of 256Meg is more like it and 512Meg is ideal.

Agreed but the chipsets on many earlier Pentiums only cached up to 64MB
of memory. Also some motherboards would only accept 2 DIMMs (or 4
SIMMs). Intel's 430HX chipset could cache up to 512MBs with the proper
TAG RAM chip. But lower end VX and TX chipsets had limited caching
capacities.

I found the point of declining returns on these older systems was 128MB
or 192MB of memory.
