A friend of mine has a compaq desktop with windows98..His PC's hard drive shows
that it is losing space rapidly and he took it into the shop to get it
repaired. The repairman ran an up-to-date antivirus scan"norton2003" and found
no viruses. Is there a virus that can cause this problem and is it possible that
norton cannot detect it?.btw "all files" are selected to scan..He also checked
out the pc and found no other problem areas..any suggestions out there?

Rhall710,

I'm not aware of any virus that eats up hard disk space, but if there is a
backup program on the system that monitors the drive for changes or is set
to run a scheduled backup that could be the culprit.

What do you mean by losing space, ????
is it being filled with information or is it developing faulty
sectors???
If it is the latter, then it is something that happens with age and it
is time for a new drive.

Taff.........

Maybe your friend is using Norton Protected unerase.
