I've been posting with this address for 10 years and have not received one
of these attachments. However, as much as I hate to have to disguise who I
am, I did start minging my email address about 18 months ago and I would
advise everyone who posts their address in public to ming their email
address. And always ming the domain to minimise Internet traffic.
Example:
real address: (e-mail address removed)
minged address: (e-mail address removed) or (e-mail address removed)
The second example will be fairly obvious to 'real' people and if the want
to email you will easily be able to edit the address. However, a harvester
doesn't have that sort of intelligence and when a spammer sends out spam
using harvested addresses, the DNS server at the spammer's ISP will be
unable to resolve the domain and will bounce it back straight to the
spammer. This keeps Internet traffic down and increases the chances of
alerting the spammer's ISP that they have a spammer and close the account.
If you ming the name side of your address (xxxnotmyname@hotmailcom ) the
email sent by the spammer will go all the way across the Internet to your
ISP before it is rejected. It is then returned: but unfortunately, the
spammer will have minged his address using a harvested address so the
rejected email goes all the way across the Internet to some unsuspecting
user who is accused of spamming. It is all pretty sickening.

Virus bait. Let's see which newsgroups are being mined.
Your IP is being pinged by infected computers.
Interestingly, I've been posting with this email-box since
August and I have absolutely NO virus attachments or spam
coming into it. However, I have 50+ per day of virus
attachments and an equal number of spam going into my old
one (on the same ISP).
