Virus Attack

HI all,
I am an XP Home user connected to broadband cable. Yesterday, having left my
machine connected I came down to a blue screen with a message that the
'hive' area was unreadable. The machine would not load. After various
expeiriments with the Norton System boot Loader and Windows XP Repair I
eventually installed a new XP system over the old one and it rus OK. I have
installed in it all the XP security Mods

However I can not load Norton 2002. I have downloaded a few virus removers
from Norton but not hit the jackpot. What do I do next.
Do the later versions of Norton, 2003, or 2004 burst past the virus that is
inhibiting the Norton 2002 reload,. Is there a general virus scanner/remover
that will load. I would be very grateful for some advice. I can't really
plough down the list of Norton virus removers, about 40 in number, hoping to
hit the jackpot. Does any one recognise the symptoms
