Recent post from Hastings "Look at the critical update from M$" contains an
attachment that is empty. Therefore there is no virus inside. However posts
like these are a prime example of the way viruses can be spread. So be
careful folks and keep your AV programs up to date.

Silly Question?

How can anyone add an attachment to a posting? I cannot
see any way to do that.

Copy an HTML file into a text post and send it, the server
converts it to an attachment.

I shall keep a watchful eye open for any attachments and
be very careful about opening them

I hope I don't regret this ;-)

From OE go to Tools->Options->Send Tab and select HTML for the newsgroups
section. OK out and close OE. When you run OE and send an email to a
newsgroup you will be able to attach files

Hi Harry,

No need to use html, I can post attachments using plain text in OE. Simon is
using the CDO, which currently doesn't offer the ability to include
attachments (and they should keep it that way).

Hi Simon,

Use Outlook Express to access these groups via the news server rather than
the clunky interface you are now using. Read this link for a simple setup:

If you get a copy of Free Agent, they are obvious... because
they are a differnt color from the regular posts.
