When attempting to set up a VPN on my notebook, I select
the option to connect to my network at work. The next
screen greys out both the VPN option and the dial up
option.
I use the same notebook at work and and at home.

I connect to the internet at home with cable, I am listed
as the administrator on my machine. My ethernet works at
the office and I have a wireless network at home that
works.

Any suggestions on why VPN is not being allowed? Did I
disable a service or something?

Check the status of the Remote Access Connection Manager.

If you disabled it from starting, enable it.

If it is enabled , but not started, try starting it.

If it errors out, with a code 5, reinstall Service Pack 1 for Windows XP
('could have said that at the beginning, but we should be rigorous.)

If you restored to a restore point before SP1, this can happen. If you
reinstalled XP over itself post SP1, this can happen. If you upgraded XP
Home SP1 to XP pro this can happen.
