My neighbor is setting up a laptop and desktop computer in a room in his
basement. The laptop is for work and he connects through a VPN. He has been
told that his wife cannot be using her desktop unit when he is using the
laptop. They are connected to a residential gateway by ethernet and
subscribe to Bell Canada Sympatico high speed DSL service. Is his company's
IT person correct in stating that only his machine can be used when he is
connected to the company VPN? I do not have any knowledge of how the VPN
connection works. My wife and I have the same residential gateway and DSL
line in our home but she connects to her company using a password and I am
still able to use my machine at the same time. I would appreciate any
comments as his wife would like to use her machine at any time she wished.
Do they require a second DSL line?

Depending pm the way that the VPN is set up, this is not "valid" The
laptop should have the VPN "end" client software so that it is to only
PC that can access the company's network. If this is not the set up
used, then the company "should" provide a separate DSL service a part
of the current Bell DSL.

It should not matter at all. Lots of people use the same setup with no
problem.
