When running a Virtual machine connected to the I'net, is it necessary to
have a host firewall enabled on the virtual adapter, or is the security on
the host machine's physical adapter via it's firewall all that is needed to
secure the virtual I'net conection?

Yes, it is absolutely necessary to have a firewall and antivirus
installed on a Windows operating system. It does not matter that the OS
is in a virtual machine - it is a *real* OS and vulnerable to viruses
and malware just the same as if it were installed on a standalone
machine. Also, if you are sharing files with other machines on your
Windows network and the vm gets infected with network-aware malware your
networked machines are at risk. The vm OS doesn't "know" it is in a vm
hosted on another machine.
