OK, this may be a dumb one but here goes. I want to instal WinXP 32bit
on my Vista Home Premium 64bit system. I installed VPC, start the
WinXP install process and when it gets to the "format partition" part
of the show, I get kinda nervous, I don't like the word "format", at
least when I'm not expecting that word. Is it ok to tell it to format
or will it hose my machine? Thanks!!

You would be formatting the virtual drive only in the Virtual PC.
No problem at all.

VirtualPC creates a file that is, in fact, used as a hard drive. It is this
"file" (the .vhd file) that you are formatting, not your physical hard
drive.

You can use the Virtual Disk Wizard to convert the virtual drive to a fixed
size. I would recommend 6-8 gig for Windows XP. It's actual size will likely
be smaller, but you have to leave it space to grow. You can also just leave
it as it is - dynamic. It will still be quite small actually.

You have to clean out the VD, just as you do an actual hard drive, to
maintain it. Then defrag and compact it. After doing so you may see the VD
shrink by 1-2 gigs. I see this frequently.

It doesn't allocate that size unless you tell it to... if you don't tell it
to allocate the size during creation of the VM, then that's the maximum size
VPC will allow that VM to which to grow. In other words, your VM will be
much smaller than 65GB's until you fill it up with 65GB of stuff.

No need to worry. You can't bugger your computer up at all with virtual pc.
The only thing that you can bugger up is the operating system running under
vpc
